# Floating IPs

> How to rent a floating IP address in the Ascienth console, move it between your servers, manage its billing, and cancel it.

## Overview

A floating IP is an extra IPv4 or IPv6 address that you rent in one city. It is not tied to a server. You can attach it to any of your servers in that city, detach it, and attach it to another one later, while the address stays the same. Your servers keep the addresses they were built with.

Open the Ascienth console at [https://console.advinservers.com](https://console.advinservers.com) and click "Floating IPs" under "Resources" in the left sidebar.

<Note>
  A floating IP is paid for from your [account credit](/guides/account-credit). You can only buy one in a city where you already have a server, and it can only be attached to your servers in that city, one at a time.
</Note>

Team members need these permissions:

| Permission | What it allows |
| - | - |
| `View networking` | See the floating IPs. |
| `Change networking` | Attach and detach floating IPs. |
| `Make purchases` | Buy floating IPs with the account owner's credit, cancel them, and withdraw a cancellation. |
| `View billing` | Open an address's billing pages. |
| `Delete networking resources` | Give back an address that is not billed. |
| `Transfer floating IPs to their own account` | Move a floating IP to the member's own account. |

## The Floating IPs Page

The table lists every floating IP in the team you are working in:

| Column | What it shows |
| - | - |
| `Address` | The IP address. |
| `City` | Where the address is. |
| `Attached to` | The server it is on, or `Not attached`. |
| `Status` | `Active` once it is ready. `Provisioning` while it is being paid for, `Needs funds` if your credit ran short, `Attaching` or `Detaching` while it moves, and `Suspended` if its service is suspended. |
| `Price`, `Cycle` | What the address costs and how often. An address included at no charge shows `Included`. |
| `Next due`, `Autopay` | When it next renews and whether automatic payments are on. |

The actions for an address are in the menu at the end of its row.

## Buying a Floating IP

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the buy dialog">
    Click `Buy Floating IP`. If the button is greyed out, hover over it to see why. For example, you may already hold as many addresses as your account allows.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the city and type">
    Pick the `City` and the `Address type`, `IPv4` or `IPv6`. The `Price` field shows what it costs and how often it renews. A bar shows how many addresses of that type you hold out of your allowance.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Buy it">
    Click `Buy address`. The cost is taken from your account credit, and the address appears in the table as `Provisioning` until it is ready.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  You need enough account credit to cover the price before you can buy. If you do not have enough, the dialog tells you how much to add. Only the account owner can add funds. See [Account Credit](/guides/account-credit).
</Warning>

Your allowance of floating IPs is set per account. If you need more, open a ticket in the client area at [https://clients.advinservers.com/contact.php](https://clients.advinservers.com/contact.php).

You can also buy a floating IP from a server's "Networking" tab, and it is attached to that server once it is paid for. See [Networking](/guides/networking#adding-an-address).

## Attaching and Detaching

<Steps>
  <Step title="Attach the address">
    Click the menu at the end of an unattached address and choose `Attach to server`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick the server">
    Choose the `Server` and click `Attach`. Only your servers in the address's city are listed.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for it">
    The `Status` column shows `Attaching` until the address is on the server.
  </Step>
</Steps>

To take it off, choose `Detach` from the same menu. The address stops routing to that server, but you keep renting it and can attach it somewhere else. Anything still using it on that server stops responding.

<Note>
  An address that is still being paid for cannot be attached yet. You also cannot attach or detach an address while its server is busy with another operation, such as an upgrade.
</Note>

## Managing Billing

Click the menu at the end of an address and choose `Manage billing`. The billing page has three sections:

* "Overview" shows the price, how often it is billed, the next due date and whether automatic payments are on. It is also where you cancel the address.
* "Automatic Payments" lets you turn automatic payments on or off and choose whether renewals are paid from your account credit.
* "Billing Cycle" lets you change how often the address renews, where that is offered.

Changing these needs the `Manage service billing` permission. Only the account owner can set up new automatic payments. See [Payment Methods](/guides/payment-methods) for how payments work.

## Cancelling an Address

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start the cancellation">
    Choose `Cancel address` from the address's menu, or click `Cancel Address` on its "Overview" billing page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose when it stops">
    Under `When it should stop`, pick one:

    * `End of billing period`: the address keeps working until the period you have paid for ends, then stops. Nothing more is charged.
    * `Immediate`: the address stops today and is released. If a refund applies, the dialog shows the amount, and it is added to your account credit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    Type the address to confirm and click `Cancel`.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Danger>
  When a floating IP is cancelled, it goes back to the pool in its city and anything using it stops responding. Someone else may get the address afterwards. You cannot get the same address back.
</Danger>

If you only want to stop being charged automatically and keep the address, turn off automatic payments under "Automatic Payments" instead.

A floating IP that is the primary address of its server cannot be cancelled immediately. Set another IPv4 address as primary first. See [Networking](/guides/networking#changing-the-primary-ip).

### Withdrawing a Cancellation

If you chose `End of billing period` and change your mind before it ends, choose `Withdraw cancellation` from the address's menu and click `Keep the address`. The address stays yours and is invoiced as usual. Automatic payments that were stopped by the cancellation stay off until you turn them back on.

## Giving Back an Included Address

Some addresses are included at no charge and show `Included` as their price. There is nothing to cancel for these. To return one you no longer need, detach it first, then choose `Give back` from its menu and click `Give it back`. It stops counting against your allowance.

<Warning>
  You cannot claim a given-back address again, and a replacement is not free.
</Warning>

## Frequently Asked Questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can I use a floating IP in a different city?">
    No. A floating IP belongs to the city it was bought in and can only be attached to your servers there.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does a detached floating IP still cost money?">
    Yes. You keep renting it until you cancel it.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why is the Buy Floating IP button missing?">
    It is only shown to the team owner and to members with the `Make purchases` permission.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I move a floating IP to another team?">
    Yes, if it is not attached to a server. Choose `Move to team` from its menu. The account owner can move it between their own teams. A team member with the `Transfer floating IPs to their own account` permission can move it to their own account, which cancels its automatic payments. See [Teams and Accounts](/guides/teams-and-accounts).

## Using the API

Floating IPs are under `/api/v1/client/floating-ips`. Your API key needs `network.read` to list them, `network.update` to attach and detach them, and `billing.purchase` to buy, cancel or withdraw a cancellation. Buying takes two calls: get a quote from `/floating-ips/quote`, then send its `quote_token` with your order.

```bash theme={null}
curl -X POST https://console.advinservers.com/api/v1/client/floating-ips/<FLOATING_IP_ID>/attach \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"server": "<SERVER_ID>"}'
```

See the [API introduction](/api-reference/introduction) for how to create a key and for the full list of endpoints.
