# Server Overview

> How to find your servers, control their power, read their usage graphs, open the browser console and check the audit log in the Ascienth console.

## Overview

This page covers the everyday screens of the Ascienth console at [https://console.advinservers.com](https://console.advinservers.com):

* The "Virtual Servers" list, where you see all your servers and act on several at once.
* A server's "Overview" tab, with its status, power buttons and usage graphs.
* The browser console, for using the server when SSH or remote desktop is not working.
* A server's "Audit Log" tab, which records what was done to it and by whom.

Settings such as the name, firmware and boot order are covered in [Server Settings](/guides/server-settings).

## The Server List

Click "Virtual Servers" in the sidebar. This is also the page you land on after you sign in.

Each row shows the server's name and hostname, location, IPv4 address and state. On wide screens the row also shows the price, billing cycle, next due date and whether renewals are paid automatically. Click a server to open it.

* **Search:** type in the search box to filter by name, hostname, location, operating system or IP address.
* **Sort:** click the `Server` or `State` column heading to sort by it.
* **Orders:** servers you have ordered but that are not built yet are listed as their own rows with an order status. See [Ordering a Server](/guides/ordering-a-server#after-you-place-the-order).
* **New server:** click `Deploy Server` to order another one.

The list updates on its own when a server changes state, so you do not need to refresh the page.

### Acting on One Server

Click the menu at the end of a server's row for quick actions:

| Action | What it does |
| - | - |
| `Rename` | Change the name shown in the console. Nothing on the server itself changes. |
| `Change hostname` | Change the hostname set on the server. |
| `Change OS icon` | Pick the logo shown beside the server. |
| `Move to team` or `Move to my account` | Move the server between your account and a team. See [Server Transfers](/guides/server-transfers). |
| `Cancel service` | Request cancellation of the server. See [Invoices and Billing](/guides/invoices-and-billing#cancelling-a-server). |

### Acting on Several Servers

Tick the box at the start of each server's row, or the box in the header to select every server on the page. A bar appears with the actions you can take on the selection:

* `Start` starts the selected servers. Servers that are already running are left alone.
* `Stop` stops the selected servers. The dialog lets you choose between a graceful stop and a force stop, as described in [Power Actions](#power-actions).
* `Change Autopay` sets whether renewals for the selected servers are paid from your account credit. See [Invoices and Billing](/guides/invoices-and-billing).

`Start` and `Stop` only appear when at least one selected server can be started or stopped.

## A Server's Overview Tab

Click a server in the list to open its "Overview" tab.

The header shows the server's name, primary IP address and hostname (click either to copy it), when it was created, its plan, vCPU, RAM, disk, transfer and location. The power buttons are on the right.

Below the header, five cards show:

| Card | What it shows |
| - | - |
| `State` | Whether the server is running or stopped, or what it is busy with, such as `Installing` or `Restoring`. |
| `CPU` | Current CPU usage. |
| `Memory` | Memory assigned to the server. |
| `Bandwidth` | How much of this month's transfer you have used. Hover over the figure for the exact amount. Click `Bandwidth` to see the date it resets, which is the monthly anniversary of the service. |
| `Storage` | Disk size. |

If an invoice for the server is unpaid or overdue, a notice at the top links to it.

### Power Actions

The buttons in the header control the server's power:

| Button | What it does |
| - | - |
| `Start` | Turns the server on. Shown while the server is stopped. |
| `Restart` | Restarts the server. |
| `Stop` | Stops the server. |
| `Kill` (in the `...` menu) | Cuts power immediately. |
| `VNC` | Opens the browser console. See [Browser Console](#browser-console). |

`Restart` and `Stop` open a dialog with a `Force reset` or `Force stop (kill)` box, which is ticked by default:

* **Ticked:** the server is reset or powered off immediately, like pulling the plug. Unsaved data may be lost or corrupted.
* **Unticked:** we ask the operating system to reboot or shut down cleanly. If a graceful shutdown has not finished after one minute, the server is powered off.

<Warning>
  A force stop or force reset can corrupt files that were being written. Untick the box when the server is responding normally.
</Warning>

The status changes in the header once the command has been carried out. Power buttons are unavailable while the server is busy with another operation, such as a reinstall, a restore or a snapshot.

### While a Server Is Busy

When the server is installing, restoring, being upgraded or moved, a notice explains what is happening, and most tabs are disabled until it finishes. The "Overview" and "Billing" tabs stay available. While a snapshot is being taken, the "Snapshots" tab stays available too.

A suspended server shows a **Suspended** notice, with the reason when there is one.

If the last install did not finish, the notice **The last install did not finish** appears with a link to `Try the install again`. See [Server Reinstallation](/guides/reinstall). If it fails twice, open a ticket in the [client area](https://clients.advinservers.com/contact.php).

## Usage Graphs

The "Overview" tab shows four graphs below the cards: `CPU Usage`, `Memory Usage`, `Network Traffic` and `Disk Throughput`. They refresh every few seconds while the page is open.

* Choose the time range with `Hour`, `Day`, `Week`, `Month` or `Year`.
* Choose `Average` to see typical usage, or `Maximum` to see short spikes that averages hide.

The same graphs are also available on their own page, at `https://console.advinservers.com/servers/<server>/graphs`.

If a graph says `No samples were recorded for this timeframe.`, there is no data for that period yet. A server that was stopped may have gaps.

## Browser Console

The browser console shows the server's screen, as if you had a monitor and keyboard plugged into it. Use it when you cannot reach the server over SSH or remote desktop, for example after a firewall mistake or while an installer from an [ISO](/guides/iso-mounting) is running.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the console">
    On the server's page, click `VNC` in the header. The console opens in a new window.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    Click inside the console and sign in with the server's root or Administrator password. If you do not know it, see [Password Reset](/guides/reset-password).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use the control bar">
    The console's control bar has buttons to show extra keys (such as `Send Ctrl-Alt-Del`), use the clipboard, go full screen and change scaling settings.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  The console is unavailable while the server is busy with another operation, such as a reinstall. If the window shows `Waiting for the server. Reconnecting…`, the server is restarting and the console reconnects on its own.
</Note>

## Audit Log

Click the "Audit Log" tab on a server to see what has been done to it, newest first. Each entry shows:

* `Event`: what happened, for example a power action or a rename.
* `Performed By`: the person who did it, or `System` for automatic actions. Entries made by our staff are marked `Staff`.
* `IP Address`: where the request came from.
* `When`: the date and time.

Type in the search box to filter entries by the kind of action, for example `backup`. The log is split into pages; use the controls at the bottom to move between them.

For a log of everything in a team, see "Audit Log" under "Teams" in the sidebar.

## Team Permissions

The team owner can always use these screens. Members need these permissions in their role:

| Permission | Allows |
| - | - |
| `View servers` | See the server list, the "Overview" tab, the graphs and the "Audit Log" tab. |
| `Control power` | Use `Start`, `Restart`, `Stop` and `Kill`, on one server or several. |
| `Use the console` | Open the browser console. |
| `Change server settings` | Use `Rename`, `Change hostname` and `Change OS icon` from the list. |
| `Manage service billing` | Use `Change Autopay` on selected servers. |

Members only see the buttons and tabs their role allows.

## Using the API

| Endpoint | Permission |
| - | - |
| `GET /servers`, `GET /servers/{server}`, `GET /servers/{server}/state` | `View servers` |
| `GET /servers/{server}/metrics`, `GET /servers/{server}/audit-log` | `View servers` |
| `PATCH /servers/{server}/state` | `Control power` |
| `POST /servers/{server}/create-console-session` | `Use the console` |

This request restarts a server cleanly. Send `state` as `start`, `shutdown`, `restart`, `reset` or `kill`:

```bash theme={null}
curl -X PATCH https://console.advinservers.com/api/v1/client/servers/<server_id>/state \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"state": "restart"}'
```

Take `<server_id>` from the `id` field of `GET /servers`. See the [API introduction](/api-reference/introduction) for how to create a key and for the full list of endpoints.
