Overview

A floating IP is an extra IPv4 or IPv6 address that you rent in one city. It is not tied to a server. You can attach it to any of your servers in that city, detach it, and attach it to another one later, while the address stays the same. Your servers keep the addresses they were built with. Open the Ascienth console at https://console.advinservers.com and click “Floating IPs” under “Resources” in the left sidebar.
A floating IP is paid for from your account credit. You can only buy one in a city where you already have a server, and it can only be attached to your servers in that city, one at a time.
Team members need these permissions:

The Floating IPs Page

The table lists every floating IP in the team you are working in: The actions for an address are in the menu at the end of its row.

Buying a Floating IP

1

Open the buy dialog

Click Buy Floating IP. If the button is greyed out, hover over it to see why. For example, you may already hold as many addresses as your account allows.
2

Choose the city and type

Pick the City and the Address type, IPv4 or IPv6. The Price field shows what it costs and how often it renews. A bar shows how many addresses of that type you hold out of your allowance.
3

Buy it

Click Buy address. The cost is taken from your account credit, and the address appears in the table as Provisioning until it is ready.
You need enough account credit to cover the price before you can buy. If you do not have enough, the dialog tells you how much to add. Only the account owner can add funds. See Account Credit.
Your allowance of floating IPs is set per account. If you need more, open a ticket in the client area at https://clients.advinservers.com/contact.php. You can also buy a floating IP from a server’s “Networking” tab, and it is attached to that server once it is paid for. See Networking.

Attaching and Detaching

1

Attach the address

Click the menu at the end of an unattached address and choose Attach to server.
2

Pick the server

Choose the Server and click Attach. Only your servers in the address’s city are listed.
3

Wait for it

The Status column shows Attaching until the address is on the server.
To take it off, choose Detach from the same menu. The address stops routing to that server, but you keep renting it and can attach it somewhere else. Anything still using it on that server stops responding.
An address that is still being paid for cannot be attached yet. You also cannot attach or detach an address while its server is busy with another operation, such as an upgrade.

Managing Billing

Click the menu at the end of an address and choose Manage billing. The billing page has three sections:
  • “Overview” shows the price, how often it is billed, the next due date and whether automatic payments are on. It is also where you cancel the address.
  • “Automatic Payments” lets you turn automatic payments on or off and choose whether renewals are paid from your account credit.
  • “Billing Cycle” lets you change how often the address renews, where that is offered.
Changing these needs the Manage service billing permission. Only the account owner can set up new automatic payments. See Payment Methods for how payments work.

Cancelling an Address

1

Start the cancellation

Choose Cancel address from the address’s menu, or click Cancel Address on its “Overview” billing page.
2

Choose when it stops

Under When it should stop, pick one:
  • End of billing period: the address keeps working until the period you have paid for ends, then stops. Nothing more is charged.
  • Immediate: the address stops today and is released. If a refund applies, the dialog shows the amount, and it is added to your account credit.
3

Confirm

Type the address to confirm and click Cancel.
When a floating IP is cancelled, it goes back to the pool in its city and anything using it stops responding. Someone else may get the address afterwards. You cannot get the same address back.
If you only want to stop being charged automatically and keep the address, turn off automatic payments under “Automatic Payments” instead. A floating IP that is the primary address of its server cannot be cancelled immediately. Set another IPv4 address as primary first. See Networking.

Withdrawing a Cancellation

If you chose End of billing period and change your mind before it ends, choose Withdraw cancellation from the address’s menu and click Keep the address. The address stays yours and is invoiced as usual. Automatic payments that were stopped by the cancellation stay off until you turn them back on.

Giving Back an Included Address

Some addresses are included at no charge and show Included as their price. There is nothing to cancel for these. To return one you no longer need, detach it first, then choose Give back from its menu and click Give it back. It stops counting against your allowance.
You cannot claim a given-back address again, and a replacement is not free.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A floating IP belongs to the city it was bought in and can only be attached to your servers there.
Yes. You keep renting it until you cancel it.
It is only shown to the team owner and to members with the Make purchases permission.
Yes, if it is not attached to a server. Choose Move to team from its menu. The account owner can move it between their own teams. A team member with the Transfer floating IPs to their own account permission can move it to their own account, which cancels its automatic payments. See Teams and Accounts.

Using the API

Floating IPs are under /api/v1/client/floating-ips. Your API key needs network.read to list them, network.update to attach and detach them, and billing.purchase to buy, cancel or withdraw a cancellation. Buying takes two calls: get a quote from /floating-ips/quote, then send its quote_token with your order.
See the API introduction for how to create a key and for the full list of endpoints.
